In most seasons, there is one player who does the unexpected. He may be a player who was once a top prospect, but usually he is a player who is barely hanging on to a career and has been discounted by most analysts. Last season, Sam Fuld became Superman in Tampa Bay. For a period of two weeks in May, Fuld hit .393/.417/.589 and made one spectacular play after another on defense. Fuld would be ... Read More

Matt Cain became the 22nd pitcher to throw a perfect game. He also became the fifth pitcher this season to toss a no-hitter. 2012 has definitely become the Year of the No-No. While many are searching for reasons why, the truth is that they’ve always been anomalies and that is why they are so special. In June of 1990, there were four no-hitters thrown. We’ve seen three thus far this month. For Cain, ... Read More

With a +46 run differential and a six game winning streak, the Yankees are the hottest team in the American League and playing the best all around baseball right now.

2. Texas Rangers (36-26)
The Rangers lead all of Baseball with a +80 run differential. They’ve won 3 straight and 6 of their last 10.

We’ve gotten to the point when talking about baseball that every single conversation now evidently has to have the phrase, “small sample size”. At first, the phrase was a necessity as many analysts would look at some very limited statistic and make grand conclusions. But, as the analysis of the game has gotten smarter, the concept of looking at a larger sample size to draw more meaningful conclusions ... Read More

Long term success in any sport is predicated on an organization’s front office and management staff. Players win on the field and, of course, fans are the ones who supply the revenue, but it is the front office that makes everything possible. Then, it is incumbent on the field staff to make it all work, even if it isn’t perfect.

Every sport has its unique set of challenges for its management personnel. ... Read More

Another week, another no-hitter in Major League Baseball. Well, it’s not exactly one per week, but the Seattle Mariners added 2012’s fourth no-hitter of the season on Friday night. In the modern era, 1990 and 1991 are the seasons with the most no-hitters thrown with seven thrown each season. Just three away from the modern record, 2012 may not be the Year of the Pitcher, but it could be the ‘Year of the No-No’. The ... Read More

Yesterday, the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft concluded. The MLB draft will never compete with the drama and intrigue of the NFL or NBA drafts. Simply, it just takes too many years for most of the drafted players to even get close to the Major Leagues. Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, and Mike Trout are the exceptions. The majority of players are at least four or five years away from being Major League ... Read More

Baseball is the one sport that can provide a magical moment at any time. Those moments are what draws. Those moments build a bond between fan, player, and team. Few moments can eclipse a no-hitter. It is an event that draws fans without having the fireworks of offense. It is slow, intense, tension filled build up to the achievement. They are moments when fathers wake up sons to come to the TV to watch history. It’s ... Read More

Under General Manager Ken Williams, the Chicago White Sox have always had an interesting business model. It was Williams who just took Alex Rios and his $69 million contract off of waivers. He traded four players for Jake Peavy, who is always a health risk. He made the curious move to trade Daniel Hudson for Edwin Jackson. And, he surprised everyone with the selection of Robin Ventura as his Manager. Williams is ... Read More

There are a few moments that only a Baseball game can offer. No other sport can match the magic of a walk off homerun or one of those dramatic 12 pitch at bats with the game on the line. It might be because of the game’s pace or that the very essence of a game involves a one on one confrontation. Last Friday night, Johan Santana faced the St. Louis Cardinals, the National League’s premier offense, and threw the first ... Read More

My first memory of watching Baseball was seeing the Yankees Goose Gossage hit Dodgers third baseman Ron Cey in the head with a pitch during the 1981 World Series. The first team I really followed was the 1984 New York Yankees. It was the summer of Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield battling for the batting title. The following season, the 85 club won 97 games and still finished in second place. That team would be the best team I ever saw that didn’t make the playoffs.

But, the love
